A lot.
There, I said it. I always have and I hate it! My sister has the same issue and she got a prescription for some deodorant and it has worked wonderfully for her. So, I finally got brave enough to make an appointment (because heaven forbid they just call me in a prescription...they have to get their co-pay out of it). I kept telling myself, "No shots, no physical, no drawing blood...you'll be fine." I HATE the doctor (not so much THE doctor, but just going there).
"No shots, no physical, no drawing blood. You'll be fine. What's he going to do??? Look at my armpits?"
So I keep giving myself this pep talk. I even take Maddie and Lindsay with me to help with the waiting room jitters and sweaty palms that always come while there. We sit and wait and wait and wait. 20 minutes go by. Finally we get called in to an exam room. 10 minutes later the doctor appears. Swoosh...he's in! No small talk (my kind of guy) "So, what seems to be the problem?"
"Well, I sweat. A lot."
"what have you tried?"
I give him the run-down. He tries to sell me on getting over the counter Old Spice deodorant. I think to myself, "Old Spice, really. Does he realize I'm a girl and not old?"
"Huh. I'll have to keep that in mind. Can I get my prescription now?"
"Sure, I'll be right back."
(Exit doctor)
RELIEF! I made it! No shots, no physical, no drawing blood! I start to pack up the kids. Yipee I'm done.
(Enter doctor)
"Heidi, it looks like you haven't had a tetanus shot since, well...1984. Is this true?"
Lie Heidi, LIE! But the kids are here. Be honest.
"Um...I don't remember having one."
"Well, I highly recommend you do it while you're here today."
Is this a joke? I am NOT getting a shot I politely say, "No thanks."
"Well, you're 20 years overdue and summer is the time when you are most likely to get hurt..."
Shakily, I give in. "Ohhhh kay...."
"Great, I'll get the nurse in here."
Maddie and Lindsay notice the panic on my face. "Mom, are you all right?"
"Yeah, I just don't like shots at all!"
Maddie thinks this through and then says, "Mom, let's just run! He said you really don't need to do it, so let's just run outside."
I ponder this plan through.
"No, I should do it. It'll be all right." I am brave. I am brave. I will not cry. Will that new deodorant work on sweaty hands, too? I'll be fine. You are 30. Needles are no big deal.
(Enter nurse)
"Are you right or left-handed?"
"Right, why?"
"Well, you're going to be pretty sore, so let's put it in your left." I am brave. I'll be fine. HELP ME!
It's at this point I realize that the sweet nurse is the same nurse that gave me my tetanus shot 25 years ago! AHHHH....her shaky hand gets nearer and nearer. Maddie covers her eyes, Lindsay watched with big scared eyes.
And then it's over.
Moral to the story: Don't go to the same doctor that you went to when you were born. He has your entire history right there on paper. (If they even had paper back then). I was pretty ticked about the whole shot thing especially because Jer went to him last week and didn't get hit up for a shot. I couldn't figure out why, then Jeramy pointed out that he has only been a patient there for a few years...not his whole life like me. Ew.
So, bring on the rusty nails and such, I'm good for another 10 years!

Too funny. That whole thing cracked me up. I HATE needles with a passion. I don't just hate them, I get physically ill and lightheaded just thinking about it. (How, you wonder, do I have 2 children? I have no idea). Anyway, I am so happy you survived the shot, got the deodorant, and can step on as many darn nails as you want.
You crack me up! I will laugh for a good hour now thanks!
That is the funniest thing I've read in a long time :)
When Greg was born they insisted that I get one. They tried telling me that all women, if they're not current, should get one after having a baby. So where were they after my first four kids? I consented anyway and had a dead arm for the first week with a new baby. Brilliant.
