At the beginning of summer, Maddie and I read a book called "The Pumpkin Queen." It was about a girl who wanted to grow the biggest pumpkin at the county fair. We decided to grow pumpkins this year.
We also decided to challenge her Grandpa Kim to a pumpkin growing contest. We sent him some seeds. We "cheated" and planted ours a week early.
A few weeks passed, and nothing.
We re-planted in a better spot. A few weeks passed, nothing.
We went and saw Grandpa Kim. His pumpkin plant was happy and thriving.
Bummer.
We re-planted a third time. Nothing.
We gave up.
Last week, my next door neighbor came over and said, "I was pulling weeds, and there are some that don't really look like weeds." She brought me over and showed me this:
Those are pumpkins. Last fall, they left their pumpkins out and let them decompose over the winter.
Now they are growing.
So not cool. (all right, pretty dang cool).
We have tried 3 times to grow pumpkins.
We've used good soil, we've watered and loved our little seeds, and nothing.
They left rotting seeds out. Didn't bury them, didn't water them, did nothing, and they are growing.
So, we did what any 8 year old girl and her mother that were in a contest would do...
We stole one of their starts.
It's pretty small, and we might not get a pumpkin until Christmas, but by golly, we're growing a pumpkin!!
(And I did ask permission first).

I'm here to make you feel better. We planted two rows of pumpkins and two rows of mini pumpkins. We have four plants total. We planted two rows of watermelons and two rows of cantaloupes. We have zero plants total. Keep in mind that these are 25' rows. Sigh.
That's a really fun contest you're doing though, and cheating is totally fair if you admit it publicly! Good luck!
